I was sleeping the other night when I found myself sitting up, trembling with fear. This was not a natural kind of fear but a supernatural one where I was paralyzed. I looked across my room and felt a very evil presence but saw nothing. It was like a fog of terror was throughout the room and even though it was around 5 in the morning, somehow, the room grew even darker. Have you ever seen the Twilight Zone? In that show, the lighting of a scene will change dramatically as the characters experience some kind of twist in their supernatural/unexplainable adventure. That was the kind of effect going on in my room, a sudden darkness and haze. This clip here more or less shows the hazy quality of what was happening.

I could sense a demon was there by a penetrating aura of evil and maliciousness hanging in the air. I could also tell he was orchestrating this occurrence, like a small hurricane forming and swirling around him anywhere he went. He communicated with me but it wasn’t with words. My memory eludes me as to how exactly, but he “told” me in some kind of supernatural way (either through my mind or in the spirit) that he was going to come kill me at 1 pm the next day.

After he said that, I felt a slapping sensation against the back of my head causing me to jolt up from the pillow like you may have experienced after waking up from a nightmare. I looked around the room and things were back to normal; I realized I had been dreaming. I also realized that the demon was replicating my current circumstances so that when I woke up, I would stay fearful that he was still there to haunt me. Fallen angels and demons thrive off of making people fearful; it allows them greater control in controlling the person. After a few moments, I said aloud that I wasn’t afraid of the evil spirit.

I had this happen to me once before. I was sleeping in an office on a couch. A devilish, brutish entity rushed out from behind a desk opposite the couch then jumped on me and terrorized me. When I woke up, I was in the same room and the circumstances were similar. It’s a little trick demons play on people to keep them in a state of fear after they wake up. By mimicking your current, real-life circumstances, they’re ingraining a thought that they’re always around to hunt you down. Outside of that, throughout my life I have had times where I felt like I was fighting paralysis while sleeping and barely able to move, but usually not with a demonic figure terrorizing me.

The occurrences I’ve experienced are known as a phenomena called sleep paralysis. Sleep paralysis usually contains 3 elements that characterize it: 1) An inability to move major muscles. People often can only move their eyes, fingers, toes, and facial muscles, if anything. 2) The presence of a demonic, strange, and/or evil figure. It is often sitting on the person’s chest or at the edge of the bed, watching them ominously. 3) a (supernatural) feeling of horror. These occurrences have been recorded throughout history as far back as 400 BC and across all different countries and cultures. The following famous painting is dated back to the 1700’s and depicts someone experiencing it:

In reality, sleep paralysis is a ploy used by demons to terrorize the victim and put them in a state of bondage by living in fear. It is often accompanied with a sense of dread and/or the spirit communicates that it will kill the victim at a certain time.

The next day at that time was when I was supposed to speak with Pastor Pam Sheppard ona regularly scheduled pastoral counseling session. Pastor Pam has run into a number of clients, many of who are mentally ill, who continually heeded these warnings and lived in fear because of them. That is the goal of the demons using these ploys: to torment the victim and keep them in fear, thereby weakening them.

I have faced demonic-induced fears during my time in RESCUE and have been able to overcome them through counseling with Pastor Pam. One of the core foundational teachings that I was taught in RESCUE is knowing the enemy and learning how they operate. Because my counseling sessions taught me that demons use fear to control their victims, I was able to quickly discard my recent experience and move forward without fear.
